Karon's Herby Tip
THE MIDGY

This scourge of Scotland is but a fraction of the size of its foreign cousin the mosquito, but boy does our little guy have some bite!

As many folks will testify, the midgy and his myriad friends (he is very sociable and likes to travel (and eat - you!) in a vast pack with family and friends)  can ruin an evening in the great outdoors within minutes of you setting foot on turf and admiring the view.

What to do, well there are many chemical options available, but l like to stick to natures store cupboard and use essential oils to help fight the pesky critters and keep them at bay.

Flies of all types are notoriously unimpressed by lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus and lemon oils (also that old standby Citronella that so many mosquito repellents are made of). Used either in combination or singly they can be very effective against the midgy.

A word of warning here, the only essential oil that you can apply to your skin anywhere is lavender and tea tree oils, do not put pure essential oils of any other type on your skin. It is best to keep cotton wool balls to hand and put a few drops of the oils on this.

You can use a small atomiser (small plastic ones available for about 75p from major chemists) and fill with water with a few drops of your oils inside. Shake well and spray around your clothes etc, avoid the face. If you are sitting outside then use an oil burner and your oils in the bowl above the candle. Well l hope this helps you to keep the 'friend of Scotland' at arms length this summer. Just remember, he is helping to keep the countryside relatively free of crowds with his legendary tales of fearsome ferocity!
